Reporting Systems for Nonprofits: Better Decision Quality

Image
Reporting systems  for Nonprofits often get taken for granted. Nonprofit leaders think they must live with their existing reporting systems because they are unaware of any alternatives. Or, if they know alternatives exist, they assume these options are too expensive. Yet, not-for-profit leaders feel frustrated with their existing reporting systems. Among the reasons are: No Single Source of the Truth When separate reports fail to “tie out” as expected, Leaders do not know which version to trust. This can be caused by tapping information from various software programs that use different internal rules to process data. This creates “data silos” that force the Nonprofit to devise cumbersome methods to match up data. This puts pressure on the Nonprofit’s technical resources to continually maintain these custom data integrations. If the Nonprofit lacks the internet technical expertise to create these integrations, costly outside resources may need to be used. Inflexible Reporting...

Social Media Benefits for Nonprofits

Image
There are definitely social media benefits for Nonprofits. Nonprofit social media has become a primary way Nonprofits connect with Stakeholders and the community at large. According to  Hootsuite , a global leader in social media management, there are several ways Nonprofits can leverage social media. Promote Awareness In seeking to accomplish its mission, a Nonprofit must communicate, educate and advocate. It must reach out to an audience of its existing stakeholders, potential stakeholders and the overall community to support the Nonprofit’s mission. Awareness can be raised via many channels, but today, Nonprofit social media provides a lot of bang for the buck because of the huge popularity of this growing medium. Build Community Another one of the social media benefits for Nonprofits is its ability to bring new people into the organization’s community and engage existing Stakeholders. Stakeholders who interact with others in the organization experience a feeling of belon...

How to Boost Association Member Retention: The Database Solution

Image
Learning how to boost Association Member retention is a big concern for organization leaders. The logic goes like this: Members will stay if their expectations about being a Member are being met. Yet, do leaders truly know what Members expect and want?  Faith in the Value Proposition Associations offer a  value proposition  to Members that says, “If you join, you’ll receive these valuable benefits.” Members join the Association in an act of faith, expecting that they will receive the promised value.  So, now that they appear on the Membership rolls, how does an Association know Members’ expectations are being met? This information is crucial to know as soon as possible. Not knowing soon enough could mean some Members leave the organization before leaders have a clue that expectations were not being met. What are some ways leaders achieve the goal of learning how to boost Association Member retention? Creating a Solid Member Database All Members ...

Why and How to Launch a Major Donor Program?

Image
Why and how do you launch a major donor program? Well, let’s start with facts:  Over the past four decades I’ve found that 5% of donors usually account for 90% of an organization’s fundraising results.  So, it’s pretty obvious – you need to pay attention to the 5% of donors that provide 90% of the organization’s funding! That’s not to say you ignore the other 95% of supporters, it’s just basic math. This is why you launch a major donor program.  Some or g anizations consider a major donor anyone that donates over $250 – while many universities consider major donors as anyone donating over $250,000. That’s quite a range…. Then there’s trying to figure out – is a major donor someone that gives a single gift above $1,000? What if they make monthly gifts of $83.34 (which is over $1,000 for the year) – do they count as a major donor too? I’ve usually gone with one-time gifts over a certain dollar amount – and stewarded monthly donors a different way ( blog post coming o...
